Oak Hill has yet to play a boys’ golf match in optimal conditions this spring, and the Golden Eagles still were able to set the nine-hole team scoring record Thursday evening.

On a windy and cool evening, the Eagles shot a 3-under par 141 on the front nine of their home Arbor Trace course in a dual meet with Madison-Grant. Cody White was medalist at 3-under 33 and Michael Law and Adam McDivitt followed with 34s.
Brayton Swan rounded out the Eagles scoring with a 40 and wasn’t at his best. Yet, the foursome beat the former record of 146 held by the Tyler Keith and Zach Kinch-led 2010 team also on the Arbor Trace front nine by five strokes.McDivitt brought the Eagles’ round to a spectacular conclusion when the sophomore holed out on the No. 9 fairway for an eagle on the par 5 hole. The top three golfers played the course in 7-under par.

“Coming onto No. 9 Adam had hit more greens than anybody,” Oak Hill coach Gerry Conway said. “His tee shot was in the fairway, and his second shot was 60-70 yards from the green in the middle of the fairway. And then he wedged in his third shot for an eagle.

“Adam’s coming into his own this year and he believes in his ability, and his shot certainly capped off a great night,” Conway said. “Those were tough conditions and everyone played great except for Brayton, but it’s hard to get all four or five playing to their maximum potential at the same time every night.”

Oak Hill has played three times and two other meets were cancelled. A nine-hole dual meet with Marion likely will be made up, but Saturday’s 18-hole Huntington Invitational is a casualty to the weather.

In their two previous outings, the Eagles shot a 162 at Peru’s Municipal course in blustry conditions and 176 at Etna Acres in the rain and cold. Conway said neither meet was indicative of their scoring potential.

“These guys all the way through the four spot are as good as we’ve had in a while,” said Conway, whose in his 15th season as Eagles coach.

White and Swan, both juniors, have been mainstays since their freshmen years and led the Eagles to sectional championships in 2013 and 2014 at the Timber Ridge course, Bluffton. Law also was on both teams and is the team’s only senior, while McDivitt was a member of last year’s championship team.

If Oak Hill could put together two nines like Thursday during the state tournament, then the Eagles certainly could challenge for its first ever state finals berth. Conway said the team has made it a goal, but even a score under 300 doesn’t guarantee advancing out of the regional.

“Sure, the goal is to try and get this team to state,” Conway said. “That’s not as easy as it was because there are fewer regionals and not as many teams get to go. But if we could take Thursday’s score that would get us on track.”

The Eagles golfers have incentive to keep their scores low after becoming part of fundraising activities for Vada Hornocker, an Oak Hill student who recently received a heart transplant. Each birdie a varsity and JV team member records this spring will benefit the “Birdies for Vada” campaign.

“They are excited to be able to do it and working on their games at the same time,” Conway said.

Oak Hill has a busy week scheduled with dual meets Tuesday at Blackford and Thursday against Mississinewa at Arbor Trace and then the 12-team Taylor Invitational at the Chipendale course, Kokomo. Marion, Mississinewa, Eastbrook and Madison-Grant also are entered at Taylor.
