Brayton Swan has been in plenty of playoffs during his golf career. On Friday night, Swan was in a playoff of a different kind.

Swan, Robert Etherton and Cody White were in a three-person playoff for the championship of the Par 3 Tournament at Arbor Trace Golf Club. All three of them shot an even-par 36 on the 12-hole, par-3 course. Swan ended up winning after birding the second hole of the playoff.

"I have always liked being in playoffs,” Swan said. "Sure, they can be a little nerve racking, but they are always fun to do.”

Swan’s 12-hole round included eight pars, two bogeys and two birdies.

The Oak Hill incoming junior was able to learn something from his first playoff hole. Going on the hill on No. 18 and hitting down to the No. 18 green, Swan used a 9-iron the first time, which turned out to be too much club. Swan hit his tee shot over the green. He had a nice up-and-down to save par.

White missed a birdie putt and Etherton also got up and down for par, so all three had to play the hole again.

On the second time, Swan used a pitching wedge and put his shot about two feet from the hole.

"The first time I pushed my shot and I had too much club,” Swan said. "Then the second time I brought it down a club and hit the shot just where I wanted.”

Etherton and White both missed birdie putts on the second playoff hole.

Friday was the third time Arbor Trace had hosted the par 3 tournament and Swan was the third different champion. White won the first par-3 tournament and Etherton won last year’s tournament.

Swan lost to Etherton in a playoff last year.

"I love this tournament because I love par 3’s,” Swan said. "I always have fun in this tournament. I had not been playing well lately, so I came out and hit some balls before the tournament today and I played better than I have been.”

Bob Cole took fourth place in the tournament with a 37.

There were 51 players in this year’s tournament.

"The tournament went pretty smooth, I was pleased,” Arbor Trace Golf Professional Doug Piper said. "It was great weather. The scores were a little bit higher than what I thought, I thought we might have some people come in under par.”

Piper said Arbor Trace plans on hosting the tournament again next year, but is unsure if they will do it on a holiday weekend.
